a) Our Unique AFC Connectivity Loop

True connectivity between the Smart-FBX™ Farebox and the account-based Central System utilizing a cloud environment to connect everything that is happening in the farebox directly to the back-office. This allows the city of Annapolis to have access to all devices in the farebox and also configuration ability from the account-based central system that supports all on-going ridership requirements.

b) Ease of Use for Agencies and Customers

  • BEA’s patent-pending internal rack provides the ultimate ease of maintenance; it can be removed in seconds, allowing maintenance personnel to easily replace any device.
  • Three ways to move data to and from the farebox:
    • Wi-Fi: ideal for garage communications and transactions.
    • 3G: Ideal for real-time alerts of functionality and status of the farebox
    • Data-Probe: Secondary and alternative connectivity for extraordinary events
  • Cloud-based Central System with intuitive web portal design is easy to learn and easy to configure.

c) Farebox extensibility for new functionality

Our Issue-Read-Write-Print cards device can address current required functionalities, but also will meet additional needs. Initial functions:

  • Issue paper magnetic stripe tickets for transfers
  • Read paper magnetic stripe tickets
  • Write paper magnetic stripe tickets; change cards, new balance, cancel transfers, etc.
  • Print paper magnetic stripe tickets; for new balance, expire date, transfer due date, etc.
Same internal device, will be able to up-grade the farebox integrating another contact-less antenna, allowing new functionalities:
  • Change Magnetic Stripe paper cards for Paper Contact-less Cards
  • Issue-Read-Write/Encode Plastic Contact-less Cards
  • Add value to the Contact-less plastic Cards, allowing the City to use the farebox as a part of its reload-card environment net

d) Our touch-screen for riders liberates the driver from unnecessary cashier functions

The touch-screen allows a rider to interact with the farebox to receive tickets and transfers or request other functions that will improve the fare system. Although the farebox comes standard with this functionality, BEA recommends adding it in a second phase of implementation, once the user and the driver are familiar with the system.

e) Open and Scalable System

Our solution is standards-based and relies on widely used platforms and APIs. This provides investment protection, facilitates the ability to expand in size and functionality, and allows for the ongoing integration of innovative solutions.

f) Mobile Payment Ready

To enable any Transit Agency thought-leading engagement with transit technology. We will deliver a mobile ticketing and payments platform that integrates seamlessly with the system. This includes a mobile ticketing application and an e-commerce website branded for the Agency. The farebox BEA Smart-FBX™ model have an integrated QR code reader to read and process QR code electronic images form smartphones. The QR code reader is integrated in the farebox and it is flush with the top surface of the farebox. The QR code reader permits passengers to easily and rapidly present their smartphones to the QR code reader window.

g) Central System Architecture

The future of hardware/software systems is to host them in the cloud to enable higher security, easier modifications and more cost effective implementations. This is true for large transit agencies and even more critical for smaller agencies. This approach is even more critical for transit agencies located in locations impacted by extreme weather, fires and earthquakes. BEA Transit Technologies partners with innovative companies like Diginome to offer superior cloud based mass transit management solutions. Two fundamental advantages/benefits include the following:

  • Flexible and fully functional data driven AFC modules with that are maintained from a central location for fast response. This eliminates the need for expensive travel to debug software functionality on site.
  • Ease of adding additional features. The main benefit is the ability to only pay for required modules with the confidence that additional features can be added without expensive field upgrades.

h)  Improved Data Gathering and Reporting

The system includes customized reports and strong data audit for effective management of the transit system. The objective is to leverage the smart fareboxes to collect key information in order to optimize and manage the system. It can integrate 3 years of previous data into the new Central System provided by BEA.

i) Ridership Transparency and Accountability for Employers, Universities and Colleges

As a part of the smartcard solution, BEA offers a feature through the account-based central system that will provide companies, universities and colleges the ability to use their own ID smartcards issued to their employee or students that can be used on the transit system buses. This will be accomplished through an ISO compliant smartcard with an encrypted security key for validation through the smartcard readers that exist on BEA’s Smart-FBX™ Farebox. These smartcards will be purchased and managed by authorized personnel, and the system will provide monthly ridership/usage information to these personnel through a web portal.
